Getting around on budget

Most people, when they arrive in a new destination, go straight to the nearest taxi rank and end up much lighter in their budget. That money could be better spent on experiencing local cuisine, joining a tour, or visiting an attraction—instead of disappearing on a single taxi ride. How you get around can make a big difference to both your budget and your experience. Most cities offer some form of public transport, bike rentals, or ride-shares, so let’s look at the options you’re likely to find on your travels.

Public Transport

Rome2Rio

Rome2Rio is excellent platform, when you’re planning how to get from point A to point B. Just type in your start and destination, and it shows you all the possible transport options — flights, trains, buses, ferries, even rideshares. It’s great for comparing prices, travel times, and seeing which option fits your budget and schedule best.

Trainline

If you’re traveling in Europe, Trainline is one of the easiest ways to book train tickets. It brings together multiple rail operators into one platform, so you don’t have to navigate dozens of different websites. Trainline often highlights discounts, offers mobile tickets, and can even compare train vs. bus options for some routes.

Local Transport and Passes

Many cities run their own official apps or websites for buses, metros, and trams. These usually let you check routes, schedules, and sometimes even buy tickets directly from your phone. On top of that, a lot of destinations offer tourist passes — day or week tickets that give unlimited rides for a set price, which can save you a lot if you plan to move around frequently

Eurail/Interrail

For longer trips across Europe, passes like Eurail (for non-Europeans) or Interrail (for Europeans) give you flexible train travel across multiple countries. They’re not always the absolute cheapest option, but they can be incredible value if you plan to visit several destinations by train in a short period.

Walking and bike rentals

Walking is the most affordable as it is free. When you walk around new place it gives you sense of adventure and you are getting to know the place you temporarily call home. From walking the streets of a bustling city to hiking through scenic trails, walking allows you to explore at your own pace and discover hidden gems that you might miss when using other forms of transportation. Plus, it's a great way to stay active and healthy while immersing yourself in the local culture and environment.

Some cities also offer bike rental services, which can be a fun and efficient way to get around. Many bike rental programs have stations throughout the city where you can pick up and drop off bikes as needed. This not only saves money on transportation costs but also allows you to cover more ground than walking alone, all while enjoying the fresh air and scenery.

Carpool

You can save a considerable amount of money even on long-distance journeys with carpooling. It’s one of the simplest and most budget-friendly ways to travel: drivers with empty seats connect with passengers heading the same way, and the costs of fuel or tolls are shared. Carpooling services like BlaBlaCar are often cheaper than public transport, and you get the added bonus of meeting locals and sharing travel stories along the way. I had one of my best experiences using BlaBlaCar in Spain — by coincidence, my driver was a Spanish teacher while I was learning the language. On the trip from Córdoba to Madrid, we spent hours laughing and chatting about the differences in Spanish across countries. It was far more enjoyable than a bus ride would have been. Just make sure to check reviews and communicate clearly with your driver beforehand to ensure a safe and comfortable ride.

Ways to find activities

Finding activities that fit your budget can be a rewarding part of travel. When you’re traveling on a budget, the way you spend your time is just as important as where you sleep or what you eat. Finding affordable or even free activities can make your trip feel richer without draining your wallet.

The good news is, with a bit of planning and curiosity, you can discover experiences that give you a real taste of local life — from exploring hidden spots, tasting local food, partying like local to joining community events. Let’s look at some of the best ways to find activities that fit your style and your budget.

Online resources

The quickest and easiest way to find activities in your destination is to start with online resources. You can research as deeply as you like — from official city websites to platforms like Google Maps and TripAdvisor, many of which highlight free or low-cost options.

I’ve personally found great deals and ideas on things to see and do, such as tours excursions, cooking clubs, arts and craft and many more, through apps such as Culture Trip and Get Your Guide, and by joining local Facebook groups to get ideas directly from fellow travelers and locals. These communities are often full of up-to-date tips you won’t find in guidebooks.

Even Airbnb has a section where locals offer tours and unique activities, many of which are budget-friendly and give you a more authentic experience. Another useful approach is to browse blogs and travel forums, where people share their personal experiences and insider advice on how to enjoy destinations without overspending.

Get Your Guide

Not only visit the destination but experience it. Get your guide is great platform to find and book local experiences worldwide.

Tourism Information Centres

Tourism information Centres a great help when you are already in the destination and looking for way how to get around, what events are happening in the location, what you can visit around just by walking, you can buy even tickets to attractions and events as well as souvenirs and in the same time get valuable local information you many not even find with online recources as most of the time, locals are working there, who know the area well and can provide good tips on your destination.

Sometimes when you are lucky you can even have a unique unexpected experience, like I had when i visited Tourism information centre in Colorado Springs, USA. I was looking to visit Old Colorado City and Caves of the winds and could not remember how to get there after many years. I not only got all the information I needed, but the gentleman working there offerend me motorbike ride to my destinations and looked after me until my departure to next location.

Free Walking Tours

Free Walking tours are the best invention in travel. You can find all the history, find hidden gems and get valuable insights for free or fraction of price you would pay on normal tour. What is also enjoyable, is the enthusiasm, knowledge and friendly attitude of the guides. You know they do you because they love it and that shines through. Free walking tours work on basis of tip therefore you can either havw guided walk for free or you pay what you can afford to pay.

Whenever I travel I always go on free walking tour or two, it's great to get to know the city before I go on explore in more details by myself, it teaches me about the place and I can also meet like-minded people. In the USA I have been on free walking tour with Sandesman's New Europe Tours and had great experience walking all Manhattan from The Battery Park and in Portugal free walking tour with Hi Porto Walking Tours not only took almost three hours instead of two but I also got email with list of things to see in Porto. That's how enthusiastic guide lead our tour so never underestimate a free walking tour in your destination so when you are next traveling, check the Sandemans tours.

Museums & Galleries

Museums, galleries, and cultural centers are great ways to explore a destination without overspending. Many cities offer free entry days, student or youth discounts, or special evening hours at a lower price. Even paid tickets can be worth it if the museum is a highlight of the city. Some small and local museums or community cultural centers — are often cheaper, less crowded, and give a more authentic picture of the place you’re visiting. On the other hand huge famous museums such as Smithsonian museums in Washington DC will entertain you for whole day or two and all for free as well. Museums galleries and cultural centres are great alternative in bad weather or when you want to know a bit more of history of your destination.

Meetups and event platforms

Meetups and event platforms such as Eventbrite are a perfect way not only to find like-minded people and get closer to the local culture, but also to discover a variety of events happening during your stay. From language exchanges and board games to photography sessions or just socializing with locals, these platforms make it easy to connect and build friendships on the go.

The most powerful tool, though, is still word of mouth. Platforms like Meetups, Hangouts, and even Couchsurfing often reveal activities you won’t find anywhere else. You can even ask about activities in your hostel, hotel, restaurant and anywhere where you can meet local people. When I travel, I always check for local gatherings — for example, in New Orleans I joined a Couchsurfing group for a bike ride with locals to hidden spots I’d never find on my own. In Tucson, I ended up on a long city walk that finished with canoeing and a picnic at the beautiful Parker Lake. These experiences made my trips unforgettable and much more personal.

Nature and Outdoors activities

Nature is mostly free, and when you’ve had enough of city streets, museums, galleries, or socializing, escaping into nature is the best remedy. It clears your mind, calms you down, and gives you endless opportunities to fill your camera with beautiful surroundings. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s always a great idea to check for nearby parks or hiking trails where you can simply wander, enjoy a light run, or just take in the peace.

Most destinations have quiet areas, scenic walks, or local outdoor groups — from Meetups and hiking clubs (many offer free walks before you commit to a membership) to fellow travelers at your hostel. One way or another, you’ll always find an escape into nature, so before you travel, check if there are local hiking clubs, outdoor meetups, or free guided walks as they may lead to discovering hidden spots you wouldn’t find on your own. Nature not only saves money but often becomes the highlight of a trip.

Sum up

Some of my best travel memories didn’t cost a thing — wandering through parks, joining free events, or exploring with locals I met along the way. The truth is, you don’t need to spend much to create moments you’ll remember forever. Sometimes the cheapest activities are the ones that connect you most deeply with a place.
